Rules
“Combat damage” is only the damage dealt during the “End attack” step of an attack. When Attack Ends abilities trigger at the same time as units deal combat damage. The Great Mothers do not need to survive the attack in order to resolve defeat units, so long as they dealt combat damage to those units.
